I now know Why Millions of People cried when He Died, To tell you the truth I was not fond of Him, I was Young and Stupid, those mourning days were long and tiresome for me so i was busy watching Movies, Mind you i live in those slum like residential areas where there is no street houses built to make shanty towns where alleyways are full of dirty running water emanating from nearby pit latrines, foul smell everywhere but who cares we were born there so i guess we got inbuilt biological immunity against all vermins that thrived in those stagnant water full of mosquito larvae.
Lucky Me I had sold enough cup of teas and Ginger-laced drinks during school holidays to buy my first investment, a 21 inch TV and a VCR(Video cassete recorder and player), I had to buy it even though we did not have electricity in our house, You might ask why, i got tired to lie to my friends at school when they asked whether i had seen Isidingo the night before, obviously I said Yes with no details on what happened apart from blatant answer that it was rubish, before they could ask to elaborate. My investment yes because we had extra room that my father had envisaged to run a hotel, the venture that never went far because He could not balance his books that he spent more than he could earn. When the hotel went bust, i guess there WAS no enough customers to afford buying the food...SO I used that room for my Video shows, yes We will be showing First Blood by Rambo, kids from the block flocked in like flies to the you know What!, I got some school money from it so that i could afford a piece of cassava during the break time at school.
30 days of mourning was like Hell to me I could not show Pirated Movies anymore meaning my pocket was also in Mourning Mode. on 27Th day i decided to break the Mourning period because i could no longer take it the whole of my school funding was depending on video show, so i went and picked Commando video cassette by Schwarzenegger, before the movie could even finish the preamble so that we can start watching, Knock knock on the door, Two mean looking Policemen had arrived on the scene looking so furious that i thought my living days were over. "AROOOO MUNAANGARIA VIDEO RA SHWAZINIGA WAKATI BABA WA TAIFA AMEFALIKI" one of them growled, "NANI MWENYE HIRI VIDEO" one of them added, my stomach went grogrororor i could feel wind passing out my behind as I was strugling to reveal that i was the owner of the show... one of them quickly went and took the cassete out as evidence, lucky me they could not believe that i was the owner they resorted to take my dad to the police station for further enquiry, But I asked my self we have been watching the mourning sessions, histories, procession and mourning songs for 27 days on TV, we are not allowed even to earn some money...Any way They let him free after paying them a certain amount off-camera before they could reach the police station which was about 500 metres.
Now I know why people wept, to see all what they fought for being given for free to foreigners while they starve.
Wananchi wept because Leaders are lying to their faces that the country does not have enough money to go around while they build villas, mansions and palaces and ride on Mercedes, Lexuses and VXs.
Wananchi Wept because they can't afford to walk because of hunger let alone to pay for DalaDalas leaders opting to fly because the road is too bumpy for their royal bottoms.
People wept because after 46 years of being free they still live in the shacks they were promised to be moved from to better life, they can't afford to send their kids to school even though many building have been buit for the purpose.
Wananchi WEPT because they Knew that THEY WILL BE BULLIED AND there WILL BE NO one to STOP it.
IT IS LIKE WHEN DAD GOES ON SAFARI, KIDS ASSUME LEADERSHIP DO ALL THE MISCHIEF WHILE THE TIME LASTS, ONLY THIS DAD WILL NEVER COME BACK ONLY MEMORIES AND NO ONE TO ENFORCE HIS TRUE LEGACY.
AND THAT'S WHY SOMETIMES I CRY.....
